Bishopsgate School, Englefield Green – New Sports Hall
Bishopsgate School is a co-educational independent preparatory school for boys and girls totalling approximately 360 children in the age range of 3 to 13.
Edgington Spink + Hyne were invited to produce a design for a new indoor sporting facility, plus a new artificial pitch, which would allow the successful implementation of the School’s PE and Sports programme and which would achieve planning consent in this sensitive Green Belt location.
The proposals consist of a 4-badminton court hall to Sport England’s minimum recommended standards for schools, including a climbing wall, a gym and a multi-purpose studio space suitable for dance, equipment stores, boys, girls and staff changing facilities and WCs and boot rooms.
The lower half of the facades are built in red facing brick to continue the theme of the more recent buildings at the school. The upper levels are finished in terracotta rainscreen cladding panels to create a contemporary and “lightweight” looking building. The higher sports hall volume is clad in a grey panel to form a simple clean-lined box, to minimise the visual impact of the overall massing of the building.
The south and west elevations which face towards the school and artificial pitch, are extensively glazed to create active frontages, and the north and east elevations facing out of the site are solid with minimal openings to lessen the impact on neighbours.
The project was constructed by LST Projects under a Design & Build contract through the lockdown period and was delivered in time for the start of the 2020 Autumn Term.
